Severodonetsk Tower as
a space for post-industrial
art-interventions /
Severodonetsk was designed in the 30-ies of XX century in the period of industrial gigantomania to meet the requirements of industrial chemical giant. The city was seen as a necessary supplement to the industrial areas of the plant, as a place of settlement of labor force. The social function of the city - and, consequently, the interests and desire of the individuals - were considered secondary. Severodonetsk "Azot" for a long time was not only a major employer but also was a "semantic". In the period of industrial prosperity in the factory were employed up to 75% of city residence. In the minds of the residents Severodonetsk has always been "a City around the Factory." The visual image of the city - the pipe of chemical factory. Local artists who have decided to show the image of the city-worker, began to draw it from factory chimneys. Pipes intense smoke and represent the peaceful labor, stability and prosperity. The decline of the industry and the conflict in Donbas provoked the townspeople state of permanent stress, reinforced of depressed urban environment. The situation worsened when the war came to our region. The first reaction of the city to replace the economic and political regime was the rapid degradation of the urban economy, the deterioration of the urban environment, the weakening of the social functions of the city. With that in Severodonetsk live 110,000 local residents and 60 000 people were forced to leave their homes and move to the cities beyond of military operations in the east of Ukraine. Most of these people were not ready to counteract to post-industrial challenges. Our team's mission is to attempt to change the meaning the concept of "industrial", which has long defined the image of Severodonetsk. We aim to trigger the transition from an industrial "city-factory", with clearly separated monofunctional zones to a post-industrial city, based primarily on the needs of the individual. Perhaps our initiative will be the first step in a large-scale de-industrialization, and will make a priority of the cultural industry, which must ensure the creation of new workplaces. It can restore depressed region, make it interesting and touristically attractive. An additional advantage of the creative culture in a single city is the development of local personality and patriotism. The city will be able to keep its people and become a magnet that attracts creative people from other regions. We aim to turn on the Severodonetsk city to creative city. The city which will develop and modify in accordance with the changes of necessities of habitants and the changes taking place in the world. The city where conditions that allow residents to think, plan and act creatively have been created. The need for such transformation brings a new level of the development of public spaces. People spend more time in the urban environment, not only using it only as a transport enviroment. Public spaces - squares, streets, parks, embankments, courtyards are becoming places of communication. Severodonetsk today is in a period of a new formulation of its symbolic and physical spaces, and therefore, the norms and values materialized in urban open spaces. Therefore, important factor is to find a particular point of support in the past to formulate and project a vision of it`s future. That point can be a building of the old water tower. Abandoned construction of the water tower, a symbol of the industrial age, is leaving. The Severodonetsk tower was built in 1935. It was built it as a water tower but not finished. Not yet having filled it with water, it was find out that it didn`t meet the technical requirements, such as a water tower. As a result, the tower has never been put into a service and was not used for its intended purpose. Was decided not to demolish the tower and to leave it as it is. Around the tower the forest of mulberry was planted. Citizens began to come to the tower for a walk and taste the mulberry. Some mulberry berries were by the way a giant. Now the tower is open to the public day and night. Previously there was a door, but in times of "perestroika" that door was stolen and handed over for scrap metal. From the mulberry trees only stumps have remained. In times of stable work of "Azot", on Fridays, around the tower a regular feast giant industry hard workers were observed. And this place is called - "On the stumps". The tower is located on the conditional border between the industrial part (up to the entrance Azot - less than a kilometer) and directly by the city. That is precisely its location is highly symbolic for Severodonetsk. Tower historically valuable element for us, a kind of symbol, which should be a catalyst for reflection and calls the decision facing the post-industrial Severodonetsk Namely its location is highly symbolic for Severodonetsk. The tower is historically valuable element for us, a kind of symbol, which should be a catalyst for understanding and solving the challenges facing the postindustrial Severodonetsk. The list of current problems and challenges is striking and may seem an insurmountable obstacle. However, improvement in the quality of public spaces often begins with attention to that spaces. Attracting students, inviting artists, getting permission to temporary installation and also innovative ways of using the territory - all this often doesn`t require of large investments, but can give impulses that will lead to a sustainable improvement and activity on the part of civil society. All this helps to "win" the public space of the industrial past and return it to the people. Besides of specially created places of cultural activities - theaters, exhibition galleries, cinemas, concert halls - the cultural potential of the city allows to create separate spaces of artistic direction as the own inner world of culture of this city. The existence of such environments is formed and developed by residents of the city, especially the younger generation. Right around the Severodonetsk tower will be created such a space, the main feature of which will be creativity. An example of upgraded tower demonstrates the possibility of the revival of such objects, providing the perspective of it`s functioning with a new force and a new status, which should lead to the urban environment revival in general. It should also be noted that such an approach can be considered as a kind of solution to the problem of a separate public space location for the presentation of young talents, which usually demonstrate their creativity in the street or do not have this opportunity at all. On the other hand, the use of the renewed space of the tower can have not only an artistic character, but also to ensure a wide variety of events, such as sporting directions (representatives of mountaineering community and jumpers pay attention to the Tower). As a result, a unique architectural complex will be created, which will contribute to the physical training of city residents and the organization of leisure for youth. The project is aimed at the formation of a new way of perceiving the city through public debate on the problems of preservation of abandoned urban spaces and create a new visual image of the old of the water tower of Severodonetsk by transforming the object into a social and cultural phenomenon of the live cooperation of architecture and city dwellers. An implementation of the project will have a positive impact on the cultural and social atmosphere in the city. Thanks to the implemented project will improve design of the urban environment as a set of public spaces, there will be conditions for the creative activity of the people and, as a result, will develop an internal cultural potential of the city. Moreover, to the former abandoned space is given the opportunity to continue to function in the new status. Severodonetsk Tower will be part of the cultural comfortable architectural environment within a holistic urban space. An important fact is that the project is consistent with the existing strategic documents determining the development of the city. Severodonetsk City Council approved the "Strategic Plan for Economic Development of the city of Severodonetsk 2020".

During the project implementation, a sustainable interest will generate to the new art project city - Woter tower. This interest has become a practice of constant care and attention of the object to it on the part of the city. The care and attention, in it`s turn, is transformed into a demand for holding public's creative events of different direction. We consider the tower only in the context of the whole city, rather than as a local object. The Tower may be one of the objects of the "industrial" tourist route of Severodonetsk and we plan to make the Tower as one space for the creative community, which will not only change the image of the city, but also unite the local community. We plan to involve citizens as organizers of Tower life, and not only as viewers. For example, a local business development projects would be very useful in this environment. In addition, to the creation of spaces of the Tower will be interesting to attract different age and social groups. It is planned to diversifying of the funding resources to support the tower as a sign of creative activity center (accent - on local resources). In the future will be development of an ordered green zones with the device of recreation spots and attracting of private capital. But we will not just wait for the investment. First we inhale life in a Tower, make it a popular and necessary place for Severodonetsk citizen, with a friendly and creative atmosphere.
Green Island - smart space /
The project is focused on urban solution for abandoned garages in the central microdistrict of Kremenchuk, which in the Soviet time were used as repair workshop for maintenance of housing and communal services. For more than three years our organization conducts activities in Kremenchuk, which are aimed at social transformations: we have created alternative cultural center, study the needs of local residents, interact with creative business, have established a stable partnership with local authorities. We have managed to create a community of creative activists, who are ready to invest their knowledge and resources into the development of the city. The developed intersectoral connections and human capital are the basis of the project, the desire of development is the main motivation of the project. The problem is the weak involvement of residents in the city's development due to the lack of attractive public spaces for creative communication and participation in seeking solutions to a number of challenges facing the Kremenchuk in the process of transition from an industrial past to the creative economic and social development. Kremenchuk is an industrial city, a major donor of the national budget of Ukraine, its part of the country's budget amounts to about 7%. There are large engineering and processing enterprises concentrated in the city. Industrial component dominates the people and from the Soviet era is a priority for local development. City architecture is not very original, since 90% of the city was destroyed during war and was rebuilt as a typical industrial center. Environmental problems are very relevant for the city. Therefore, in search of urban solutions for the project location (the abandoned garages), we decided to appeal to eco-architecture. This decision is relevant important for the reason that the abandoned garages are located in a depressed area of the city, in the heart of the residential area near the site of waste containers. The aim of the project is the creation of Green Island, a space of eco-responsible social order, renewable energy technologies and rational use of natural resources. Within the project a universal model of a "smart space" will be designed, created physically, and promoted, which by its existence will give people new knowledge and opportunities. The space will consist of three rooms and a small annex. The building will be provided with enough electricity and heat (by using solar energy), the plants of certain varieties will be grown there (which will be used to create an eco-kitchen in one of the rooms). Watering of plants will be carried out by organized collecting of rainwater. One of the rooms is designed for communication, recreation, work and consuming of ecologically clean food (grown right in the adjoining rooms of the same building), a summer terrace in the courtyard, room for storage of plants and a room with 3d printer of free use ("Print your dream") also will operate for visitors. The creation of Green Island will contribute to the development of the potential of local residents and create benefits for the district in several directions. Educational direction: acquaintance with alternative energy sources, new technologies and methodology of their use, nurturing the economical use of natural resources, promotion of healthy eating. Manufacturing area: the creation of open access for the interested residents for realization of their own ideas. Exploration of the possibilities of a 3D printer on real projects. Social area: developing the potential of local residents, promoting the development of eco-thinking, self-employment. In the structure of the district Green Island will become a link for the growth of the economic attractiveness and sustainable development.
Iryna Kats, Chairwoman of Cultural Dialogue NGO Board, is in charge of implementing the proposed project. She is a cultural manager, facilitator, and social animator. Specialized in temporary transformation trough cultural events and activation a local citizens based on Participatory Urban Development.

Dasha Korba, an urbanist, the architect of the project. Daria will coordinate the urban component of the project. She will design the structures, coordinate the construction, insulation of buildings, installation of energy-efficient systems. Daria will develop a program of workshops.

Alexander Atanasov is an engineer of electrotechnical systems, a mechanical engineer by education. Within the project he will serve as an engineer for energy-efficient systems. Alexander will coordinate the purchase and installation of solar panels, the legitimization of their work (consultations on the design of "green tariff" for the possibility of "selling into the network" the energy that will be generated by the installed alternative sources).
Project Sustainability will be provided by local team (NGO Cultural dialogue), which will implement this project and continue developing a created space after the completion of project activities. The team has sustainable connections and partnerships with local authorities, entrepreneurs and a clear farsighted strategy of its activities, which corresponds to the philosophy of this project. Smart space Green Island will be used as creative, educational platform with lectures and workshops to enhance the knowledge and skills of local residents, their involvement in urban planning processes. The economic component of viability of the space will be achieved partly by forming a "green" tariff and "sale into the network" of energy, which will be generated by alternative energy sources (22 solar panels) installed within the project. The developed model of a smart space Green Island, tested in Kremenhcuk within the project will be improved and promoted as a universal model to launch in any other city / village.
"TURBINE" : new creative space for community of Kherson in revitalized former vent workshop of combine-harvester factory /
Members of our organization are united by understanding that we are living in Kherson, our children will live here, and we want to live in a comfortable, open, prospective city, which can provide conditions for personal development and development of the community. That is why we have to be active citizens. First step for all of us was education, second – business career, and the next step is the development of the community and the city, in which we live. This development means bringing best practices of city development to Kherson. Our organization was created with the aim to unit people who care about Kherson and are ready to actively participate in actions for real and visible changes. One of the main problems of Kherson is that there are a lot of huge abandoned former industrial buildings in the city area; some of them are located in the centre of the city that not only forms a depressive view of Kherson but also forms general depressed economic and emotional background of the city. Active young people leave the city because of the absence of place for realization of their creative potential, innovative ideas, culture and social initiatives, and culture level of Kherson remains the same as it was 20 years ago. Two factors are needed for successful cultural development of the middle-size city: group of enthusiastic people and a space, which could become a platform for cultural and social activities. During last years, culture activists in Kherson formed an active community. Art festivals and exhibitions, First Kherson Film school, open-air screening of films, open lectures, alternative musical and theatrical events of high level are organised by different culttriggers but for each event activists have to find new place. Searching for a place for cultural activities is the main problem for Kherson. Our organisation also faced this problem: during 2 year we organised festivals "Anima" in different places (museum, library), communicated with other NGOs of Kherson and finally started to think about new common place for all cultural initiatives in Kherson. Our partner – organization Kherson Center of Cultural development "Totem", brought the first experience of revitalization to Kherson from Poland in 2008: it was transformation of abandoned city territories into public spaces. However, other experience – revitalisation of former industrial buildings, – is more actual for Kherson as post-industrial city. Activists of "Totem" Centre studied this experience in 2012 in Budapest within the international program «TANDEM»; in Kherson they shared their experience of how creative revitalisation of abandoned buildings combined with economic instruments helped to return attractive image of the city, to rescue city as a tourist centre. It was done with the help of creative people, who came to abandoned buildings and made these places attractive, and as the result, life and economic activity returned to them. Experience of Poland city Lodz is very close to Kherson in the local context – textile industry was the main for both cities in the past. In Lodz former textile factory was transformed into a creative public space, in Kherson a part of textile factory was transformed into shopping mall and the other part was just destroyed. In 2012 "Totem" Center applied to local administration with proposal to use a part of this former textile factory for needs of creative community and public, and officials were ready to support this initiatives but owners (who live outside of Kherson) had no interest and destroyed the buildings to sell metal and stones, and now we have one more huge territory of ruins in the city center. In 2016 we formed coalition of organisations, which were interested in creating new cultural space for Kherson using revitalisation experience. We found the appropriate building – former vent workshop of a factory in the city centre, and an agreement on free rent for 5 years (with possibility of prolongation) is already done. We studied successful experience of revitalisation and mobilisation of recourses of local community for such projects in Ukraine and abroad. Coalition of organisations and new generation of business people who are ready to support revitalisation practices exactly in the context of expansion of cultural space of the city. We plan to make revitalization of "TURBINE" space step-by-step, because total space of 3000 sq.m consisting of 3 floors, and area near building is near 3000 sq.m (including green zone which is also rented for free for "TURBINE" public/culture space). The first step will be the creation of public space on the 1st floor and green zone. This space will include exhibition place, lecture and cinema screening space, small alternative theatre stage, workshops for hand-made (such as pottery, rod plaiting, etc.), open café-library, zone for children – this list is preliminary because we'll collect ideas and proposals from partners and initiative groups, which will involve their own resources to create their part in common creative space of "TURBINE". Thus, for the first step we need to create attractive space that means base repairing of the 1st floor, base facilities for open events (lectures for students, schools and other groups, exhibitions, festivals, plays, etc.), art-revitalization by creating of wall-painting and installations which will be made by our partner – Centre of cultural development "Totem", which has appropriate experience. Sustainability and long-term-planning are strategic points for this project. Due to combination of community creative resources of our partners and our experience in economical development we'll provide sustainability and clear, transparent model of work that will allow involve community resources. Definitely this project will have support of regional and city authorities that will provide additional guaranties for all participants and partners. Finally, it is important to note that public organisations in Kherson talk about urbanism, urban practices and revitalisations during last years, but this is only a theoretic talk, because our city has not any practical, visible examples of urban revitalisation for the benefit of community and its culture and social development yet. Creation of "Turbine" space will be most important step for understanding of possibilities of modern urban development by the community and for the benefit of community.

Mykola Homanyuk – leader of "Totem center theatre lab", responsible for planning of alternative theatres activities in new creative space.
Ustin Danchuk – leader of First Kherson Film school; responsible for planning of activities on teaching, screening and producing films on the base of "Turbine".
The project is the first step of long-term strategy. Attractive cultural centre in Kherson will unite creative resources of the city. Revitalisation of 1st floor will allow to present this project to potential partners, investors, government and involve new resources for the development and expansion. Rent of building is free-of-charge for 5 years, and administration of factory is interested in project's success and prolongation. All activities on "Turbine" space will be organized on non-commercial base but will generate financial resources for base support – free donations from visitors, sailing souvenirs, books, tickets for festivals, organising co-working, creative café, etc. (according to the proposals and possibilities of creative community). The main principle is minimal price for all services, informing of visitors that financial means are collected for the support and development of the project and public reporting about incomes and expenditures. This way we plan to reach a self-financing model. Our partner "Totem" Centre will be responsible for culture activities of "Turbine" creative space that allows keeping concept of the space and it's functions. "We are khersoners" NGO will support and develop model of self-financing. Coordination council of "Turbine" will work on expansion of activities and involving new partners.
Cultural space «Shpykhlir» /
Aims of the project: renovation of the abandoned areas; highlighting the importance of restoration of the architectural monument "Shpykhlir"; cultural (increase of the cultural level of town citizens); educational (new urbanistic trends, ecology); social (healthy lifestyle, work with people with different disabilities, cultural rehabilitation) communication (creation of the platform for active communication of the town residents and guests). inspire neighboring towns to implement such kinds of projects preservation of traditions and updating them according to the requirements of the modern world Shpykhlir (town granary) - an architectural monument of national importance (1775), which is located in the city center, is in a dilapidated conditions at the present day. Territory of the monument - more than 3 hectares, includes a large lawn and garden city. This architectural monument is unique because it is the only saved farm building of this type in Ukraine. Monument needs urgent restoration nowadays. Realization of this project will be a perfect instrument for getting attention to the problem of Shpykhlir of the regional, local and central authorities, different types of media and even international cultural and historical institutions. Shpykhlir's territory in the last 10 years has become a place of congregation of drug and alcohol addicted individuals. The project will possibly be a good solution to cope with this problem.

Creative hub on the basis of
pre-revolutionary mining
power plant. «The Station.
To create the energy» /
Kryvyi Rih
The aim of «Creative hub on the basis of pre-revolutionary mining power plant in Kryvyi Rih.» is to create an exclusive open-space cultural hub in Kryvyi Rih based on the previous practice of abandoned industrial building revitalization. The main outcomes on the project are the following: - evakening of the public interest to the process of revitalization of industrial buildings; creating an accessible platform for the development of a cultural centre; - providing opportunities for collaboration and co-working. - creative industries support; - preservation of the creative potential from immigration; - promotion of the practices of volunteering and good-neighborly relations; - engaging citizens to the creative process of public spaces arrangement and their functional comprehension; - drawing of public attention to ecological well-being of the city; implementing the mechanisms of socially effective projects execution based on networking of an active community, experts as well as socially responsible business and authorities; The prerevolutionary power plant built in 1912-1914 by the Halkovsky lanlord for the needs of his underground mines was choosen for the revitalization project. The mining power plant was built in the unique fusion style of so-called «masonry». It is mistakenly called south-ukrainian, common for the beginning of last century for Russian Empire and prerevolutionary modern in all word meanings. An interesting detail in the interior is that there are some columns with odd creatures that look like frogs with specific spirals, the re-searchers state that such symbols are typical for masonic order, that lanlord Galkovsky belonged. One more decoration element of the plant are floral stained-glass artwork. There are no single building with pre-revolutionary stained-glass windows. The floor is made in an aesthetic mosaic style with cobalt elements. The brick looks red on the photo, but it is grey in fact, it was made of silicate, that was quarried at the same place. The building ob-tained a specific red color due to the ore dust deposit. Luckily, the building and the most facilities in it preserved well, the stained-glass windows are to be renovated, walls and roof are to be reinforced. At present, this building is being rented by an entrepreneur who makes gravestones. It belongs to the State Property Fund. Kryvyi Rih has an extraordinary story, especially at the first years of exploita-tion and mining. There are Katerynoslavska railroad, picturesque barrows and shaly cliffs nearby the power station. It creates an outstanding industrial and natural landscape. The building is located in the geographical centre of the city, it takes less then 5 minutes to get to the nearest bus stop. Instead, the great number of talented artists (actors, musicians, dancers) have no place and opportunity to prove out themselves. The smart, talented people leave the city because of soviet union stereotypes, corruption, de-pressive moods, at the time when the city has powerful resources for renewal and growth. Our main purpose is to create possibilities for the present, to re-vitalize a potent ion that seem lost, to give an impulse to the free art, large-scale projects and to ambitious young people. We are, as the the group of activists City Creator have a distinct vision of the final outcome, having a well-organized team of indifferent citizens, each of them having their own direction in implementation and regular work in the fu-ture cultural hub. For us it is very important that the supervision will be provided by the advisers from Germany or Great Britain. As the experience of similar industrial cities of these countries is very important to our city. One more significant advantage of the project we presented is its wide part-nership net that is built on friendly relationships of the group and a significant experience in social sector projects implementation. We are in a tight connec-tion with construction companies, ethnographers, mass media, bloggers, ad-vertisement and printing agencies, artists and lawyers, IT and several influen-tial non-commercial organizations who does not stand aside of the future of our city. The building possesses a unique architectural style (please, see the photo, it is astonishing), responsible and experienced team, support by the business and community, and an obvious necessity in revitalization of industrial spaces that appeared in Kryvyi Rih are the main advantages of our project. We do hope for you support.

Innovative approaches to
the development of regional economic potential: from
the creative lab to
its own entrepreneurial
business concept /
The aim of the project is to reform the city environment through the development of creative potential of citizens. This involves creating of first free business-incubator to achieve this goal. Social designing is one of the key areas of the city, region and country. However, today we can track the lack of appropriate practices at all levels of governance. Chernihiv region is the leader of slow social and economic development of Ukraine. According to the statistical and analytical study of international expert groups and organizations for the 2014- 2016, the region is one of the last places not only in terms of economic development, but also for the quality of life of residents. Thus, it remains 21st place out of 23 possible; where 22 and 23 places go to Luhansk and Donetsk region (East territory covered by military operations). However, Chernihiv region takes 4th place of the national rating for the potential of human capital, indicating the actual lack of opportunities for personal development of professional, economic freedom among residents of Chernihiv region in particular and in general. As part of the implementation of government reforms on decentralization, local communities and local governments provided extensive financial, legislative powers displayed and the dynamics of the city; strategy of the city for 2016-2020 was implemented for the first time, being established process to ensure transparent communication with the public institutions of power. However, the development rose only at the state and local pro-government institutes, the general public and public leaders have lack of knowledge, competencies and skills in self plane cultural and economic development. As international experience shows, a key growth point for both the regional community and the state as a whole is global market competitiveness of an economy that remains outside of our attention. The project team proposes to implement an ambitious plan for the development of creative thinking among the general public and establish competence, knowledge, contacts, information and support resource for professional involvement in the field of creative industries. Chernihiv, former USSR powerful industrial center, today is rich in abandoned and not functioning industrial areas. One of these zones seems to us occasionally to open the first space in the business incubator and creative laboratories bring together community workers numerical community media, photo, video and production, artists and technology developers. Based on urban employment statistics of Chernihiv universities graduates, we can point that social and employment market today is not full at all. The city has several coworkings, but none of them provides informal educational system aimed to develop own potential in the cultural plane and competitive market product making. In addition, despite the considerable achievements of Chernihiv citizens in graphics, fine arts and production – at home they are unknown through the lack of dissemination of information, exhibitions and meetings. The same applies to small and medium businesses - sharing life experience and mentoring fellow successful in this game was virtually inaccessible to examine them ordinary residents. In order to extend the practice of entrepreneurial, creative thinking and activity, we established a partnership initiative with the private owners of the city industrial zone "RemZavod." It is based in the territory of one of the oldest industrial complexes of northern Ukraine - the former repair plant "October Hammer", which work has more than a century history – from 1907 to 2014. Today the former plant-territories are mostly abandoned and not functioning. Thanks to the efforts of local entrepreneurs, NGO "Regional Agency "Vector" and the initiative group, we have repaired one of the plant building for the implementation of the concept of business and creative educational and practical spaces. The territory is at the final stage of repair: a heating system, lighting, internal communications are repaired. However, we face a new challenge - the quality of its educational content, communication processes and scientific research interests, ways of thinking and practices of urban population. In fact, for the realization of the mission and vision of the city as a creative outpost of Ukrainian culture, we have created a project team. It included youth leaders and managers, scientists, representatives of the media - both national and local importance and active city entrepreneurs interested in its dynamic and modern development.

Kryvyi Rih cultural and
industrial hub /
Kryvyi Rih
The aim of the project is to create a popular public and cultural space on the territory of industrial zone (on Petrovskyi dump exactly) in the city of Kryvyi Rih herewith to: - provide conditions for Kryvyi Rih city community gathering, communicating and holding cultural events; - create a precedent of revalorization of industrial object in the city - create a new image of postindustrial territory - form a place for uniting and consolidating local community on a basis of mutual interests - promote industrial tourism development - diversify leisure activity of the local residents - engage the residents into the process of taking care of city territory and thus, bringing up love to native land and responsibility for its maintaining. Kryvyi Rih has been successfully developed industrial tourism in the city in recent years ( Many industrial sites turned to be places of great interest both for the city residents and guests. The list of "must see places" includes mines, quarries, tunnels, Grand Canyon, dumps, tailings storage, remains of old plants, factories and many others. One of the popular places is Petrovskyi dump – a huge mountain of worked out rock (slates) located almost in the center of Kryvyi Rih in pedestrian and car accessibility, covered with plants, tress, bushes; it is a unique viewing platform where people come to see the city from the bird's eye in all its beauty, to have outdoor rest, learn about mining branch of the city, hold some excursions, events, public meetings.
This object is a part of a big industrial complex, nearby there are located some operational facilities (a big open pit) and industrial heritage units - remains of the old mine, railway traversing and so on. Besides, Petrovskyi dump is a Klondike of geological artifacts as it consists of various Kryvyi Rih rocks and minerals, whose age is more than 2 billion years. Here you can see and find by yourself interesting geological samples, create your collection of rocks and minerals, contemplate the unique colorful objects of Kryvyi Rih - red forest and road covered with red iron dust. The dump is a unique place for taking amazing pictures, a good platform for photo plein-air. Petrovskyi dump enjoys constant popularity among scientists, tourists, ordinary citizens. Since mid-1970 it has become a research platform for studying the recovery process on the ground; here people planted herbal plants, raspberries, shrubs, trees. These activities were implemented by the scientists of Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University, they examined how plants took root on this rock, how a new ecosystem is being formed. These activities were supported by the city residents who still take care of it, planting new trees and plants, namely the NGO Tourist Center Kryvbas. Due to the efforts of the volunteers, today Petrovskyi dump is maintained in a quite decent state - for the visitors' convenience they have arranged an improvised path to go up the dump, made a place for fire with a low-level protective wall , removed garbage, flattened a territory for sitting by the fire and on the edge of the dump, marked some paths and so on. The most popular event on the dump is celebrating New Year da . The tradition has been started a few years ago by active city residents who appreciate industrial potential of Kryvyi Rih and capable to hold mass public events. This year there were 132 persons, who were engaged in different festival activities, the members of NGO Tourist Center Kryvbas prepared a place for staying on the dump top by themselves, organized transportation and activities. There were many guests from other cities of Ukraine, Kiev, Kharkov..
Moreover, there are regular excursions to the dump by amateur guides who tell to all interested the mining process, show the samples of rocks, and make familiar with the city interesting places as from the dump they can see half of the city, the guide identifies these places and gives a short description of them. Due to a rising popularity of the dump and a need for Kryvyi Rih city residents to have a place for gathering, having rest and holding cultural events on this unique industrial object there is a necessity to create some infrastructure on the dump top and provide comfortable conditions for going up the dump. Now the most pressing problems are: - A very steep rise to the dump on improvised steps, which sometimes are not arranged at all, hereupon only young people and people with more or less adequate physical preparation can overcome this rise; - There is no place on the dump to shelter in case of rain and basic facilities for staying and rest (benches). So, we propose to improve the infrastructure of the dump (install reinforced-concrete steps with railings, make a fence on the viewing platform edge, built a shelter for holding events, install some informational stands, benches ) and create a comfortable cultural and industrial hub which will hold a range of activities: - public events for consolidating the community, meetings with interesting people, trainings, seminars; art symposiums and so on. - informational meetings for all interested in the industrial city, to get to know better its history and mining potential; - leisure and educational activities (outdoor family rest, holding lectures by Pedagogical University teachers about city development, its strengths and opportunities for youth in this field. We are going to implement all above-mentioned activities using the efforts of: - public utility 'Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution" - NGO Tourist Center Kryvbas - amateur Kryvyi Rih guides and photographers - volunteers from the Kryvyi Rih Pedagogical university - volunteers among the most active excursionists - NGO Kryvyi Rih Union of artists We are going to hold regular events on the improved dump – at least once a week in a warm season and 2 times a month in cold season.

The project is capable for long lasting life due to the following facts: - Partnering NGO Tourist Center Kryvbas will take care of the Petrovskyi dump as it is doing it now. Volunteers of NGO prepare the dump for holding excursions, arrange some meetings for the city residents, provide some informational meetings for all interested and so on. They plant some trees, bushes and so on, remove garbage, create some routes on the dump, flatten the viewing place, and so on. Therefore, they will keep the newly created objects and provide technical assistance for maintaining the dump in a proper state and will go on with the above-mentioned activities. Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution will fulfil two functions: - as the Institution closely works with the local community and holds different events for the city residents (festivals, open space discussions, roundtables on different issues and other) it will use the newly created object for holding public events using its administrative, informational and other resources. - promoting industrial tourism development on the dump, holding excursions for the city residents and guests (The Institution implements the municipal program of industrial tourism development) and therefore will support the sustainability of an attractive tourist place). As Petrovskyi dump is a popular place for the city residents, its popularity will be much more increased but as a public cultural place. City residents will go on visiting this place for having a look on a beautiful city panorama, for outdoor family rest within characteristic industrial scenery of Kryvyi Rih, holding events. Local authorities also support the project and are ready to use this place for holding city events.
Public Morozz-off Space (on the new Green Wave line) /
The goal of the project is to create a public youth space in the abandoned corner of the central part of Kherson in order to expand a pedestrian green zone of the city; to rally around the idea representatives of the city authorities, business, NGOs, representatives of creative and art communities; to create a precedent of fast and efficient revitalization of the above green zone to show business and the city authorities the need and opportunity of development of other similar abandoned territories of the central part of the city. The minimum objective is to create a communication and recreation zone "Public Morozz-off Space" at the end of the main pedestrian street of Kherson (Suvorov Street) on the basis of revitalization of the abandoned hospital square (the hospital does not exist anymore), restoration of the abandoned stone stage on this site to hold various public and cultural actions – lectures, performances, concerts, etc., production of sitting areas, pergolas, etc. from pallets and other recyclable materials. The restored "open-air theater" will be used during the project implementation as a platform to carry out urban workshops on each part of the project. The area of the square in fencing borders: 0.0435 hectares. The tasks planned within the project implementation are as follows: 1. Modernization of the existing stone scene. 2. Construction and installation of benches made of recyclable materials, construction of a pallet amphitheater, communication areas. 3. Installation of a collapsible dome to minimize weather dependence during actions. 4. Arrangement of power supply networks, lighting, toilets, water supply. 5. Dismantle of the fence from the side of Staroobriadnytska Street and designing a new fencing project. 6. Restoration of red lines of the surrounding streets and renewal of red lines of Hetmana Sahaidachnogo Street in borders of the designed platform. 7. A plan of gardening of the territory and its actual gardening. 8. Adaptation of the transformer box (via street art, for example) to the public space. 9. Arrangement of cycle parking. 10. Free Wi-Fi. 11. Decision-making on the destroyed building at the corner of Hetmana Sahaidachnogo Street and Staroobriadnytska Street in borders of the developed site. 12. Arrangement of the neighboring sites, the Katolytska Square as a whole, territories around the historical and architectural monuments. 13. The solution of the section of Suvorov Street in borders of its traffic zone (one quarter). Merging traffic and pedestrian zones, dismantle of borders, possible laying of the differentiated paving slabs. 14. Contest of projects on improvement of Staroobriadnytska Street from the Polish Catholic Church and "Public Morozz-off Space" to the building of the REGISTRY OFFICE (two quarters), its transformation into the combined pedestrian and traffic zone. 15. Negotiations on a possibility of opening an open-air cafe. 16. Planning and holding culture actions on the summer stage of the Public Morozz-off Space. Urban planning component. One of shortcomings of the urban planning structure of the center of Kherson is non-equivalence of the planning structure. Actually public space in the city is transit pedestrian lines of Ushakov Avenue, Suvorov St. and the central avenues of two central parks. Beyond their borders the well-planned city comes to an end. Everywhere in the center there are half-ruined buildings and the abandoned squares. One of "leaders of neglect" is the square in the place of merge of Suvorov and Staroobriadnytska streets, which we suggest to revitalize. It is located in the important place from the point of view of urban planning. The central pedestrian street of the city - Suvorov St., having the bright beginning (at the intersection of the main city streets and at an entrance to the central city park), has no distinct end. Through revitalization of the abandoned square we create the logical place of activities and recreation at the end of this street. Prolonging a pedestrian street for one quarter and increasing the value of sites through the improvement and art actions will attract small business to this space. The square was created in Hetmana Sahaidachnogo Street between Staroobriadnytska and Suvorov streets and turned into the artificial deadlock that resulted in its desolation. In addition in a quarter below Hetmana Sahaidachnogo Street was also partitioned, under a service yard of the cardiology hospital that created one more exclusion zone and caused inaccessibility to this part of the city. I.e. the urban planning mistake took place, which can be corrected through development of the relevant urban projects. Historical and cultural component. This green zone was earlier a part of the large Catholic square, in which center there was the Polish Catholic Church. In the 30th of the XX century the church was closed and turned into a movie theater that was called later by the name of Pavlik Morozov (, the territory of the area behind it is screened to creation of a green zone at the cardiology hospital. This determined the name of the public space - "Public Morozz-off Space". The old residents of the city still call this place "Pavlik Morozov". Due to the decommunization processes occurring in the country and particularly, renaming the streets, everything that is connected with the Soviet ideology causes controversy and hot debates. They are inevitable also in 2017 – in regard with the 100the anniversary of the so-called October Revolution. There will be an occasion to return once again to the subject of decommunization, public memory, especially regarding the problem of the memorials of the Soviet era in the public spaces. In the 1990th the square was ceased to look after, the hospital moved to a new building, buildings began to collapse, the square came to desolation, stones and bricks from its fencing started being stolen. Around of the area there are several historical and architectural monuments, two of them are of national value: the Admiral Senyavin House and the Mutual Credit Society House. They are historical houses of the Polish Society, of the French families, the house in which there was a boarding school for the Spanish children, etc. Thus, the site has a high tourist capacity. Part of the big project. On December 23, 2016 in Kherson at the initiative of the Urban Lab Kyiv team participants of the urban movement of Kherson offered their ideas. They presented the city objects for further development. Our team suggested to unite them in one route and to call "The Green Wave" as it passes through all green zones: the University – the Kherson Fortress Park with "The Swan Lake" – the City Park with the Open-air Theater – pedestrian Suvorov St. with an object for revitalization - the unfinished Suvorov Shopping Mall – the Public Morozz-off Space. It will be a popular walking and cycle route.

The tasks of the project contain much more ideas than it is really possible to realize. One of important results is the search of co-financing for their realization, involvement of the businessmen wishing to participate in the development of business around the potential public space. In 2015 the initiative of revitalization of this square was offered by the Kherson Community Foundation "Zahyst", which office is located opposite to the square. It intends to hold the events here in the future. This square can be included in one of the most popular tourist routes "The Kherson -De-Mason", thus the residents and guests of the city will willingly visit the square. Open-air lectures gain popularity in Europe and in Ukraine. The city will receive nearly the first constant street platform for lectures in Kherson. In addition, the cycle parking, free Wi-Fi, eventfulness of the space will also attract businessmen.
Mobile cultural and creative platform #має_сенс /
Justification of the project. The city of Kramatorsk is home to over 200 thousand people and has been known as the heart of Donbas mechanical engineering ever since the Soviet era. In 2014 the city became the administrative center of Donbas region. Kramatorsk today faces all the typical challenges of industrial cities – aging population, exodus of gifted youth, depressed state of the public, poor communication and cooperation compounded by the proximity of military operations. Another pressing issue is the inflow of IDPs from Donetsk, Horlivka, Artemivsk and other places. Statistics shows that the population of Kramatorsk increased by some 60 thousand people and has already exceeded the 200,000 mark. Relocating main administrative institutions from occupied Donetsk, including universities (among those M. Gorky Donetsk National Medical University (DNMU) and Donetsk National Academy of Construction and Architecture (DNACA) so far had no substantial impact on the city's sociocultural and employment situation. Donbas State Machine-Building Academy (DSMBA) still remains the leading educational institution in Kramatorsk, training the workforce for the industrial enterprises of Donetsk Region and Kramatorsk: (Novokramatorsky Machine-Building Plant, Starokramatorsky Machine-Building Plant, Kramatorsky Machine-Tool Construction Plan, Azovmash, Azovstal, etc.). With this said, these enterprises have to deal with declining demand for their products and must resort to downsizing. As a result, demand for old school specialists is low while new ones aren't trained since qualified professors are leaving for other cities. DSMBA today has 10 times less students than 15 years ago, going from 15,000 to mere 1,500. Moreover, the number of A-students that choose to leave town after graduating has reached 97%. The idea is to establish a cultural and creative platform in a minibus that functions as a mobile café, allowing for various events to be held in Kramatorsk during the warm seasons. Those events will deal with social, urban and other issues, depending on the chosen location. Traveling all over Ukraine, the platform will serve as a symbol of change and progress, transformation and development of post-industrial cities. It will also take part in key festivals and events in Ukraine where it will make progress reports. Selected locations will serve as a place for the exchange of expertise and presentations of the best social, cultural and urban projects initiated by this platform and its partners in Kramatorsk and other cities. This way, the mobile platform can inspire the public and direct its efforts towards solving the most pressing issues of city environment. Goal of the project: Creation of a mobile cultural and creative platform meant to revitalize the city environment through specific events and initiatives, such as a travelling art-café. It will promote constructive communication among citizens, administration and business. The goal will be achieved through projects dealing with social, economic, cultural, ecological and other issues that affect the quality of life, emigration of young people, and the overall intellectual and cultural potential of the city. Objectives: 1. To galvanize the communities of Kramatorsk by engaging them in city rejuvenation. 2. To make interactions between citizens, city administration, companies and other institutions more efficient. 3. To get the public, businessmen and administration acquainted with projects that proved successful in other cities. 4. To conduct special surveys among the public; to inform entrepreneurs and city administration of proposals that aim to mitigate mistakes in the organization of city environment. 5. To kickstart necessary changes and initiatives aimed at improving city infrastructure. 6. To stimulate development and implementation of joint projects with partners, investors and beneficiaries. 7. To hold pertinent courses, workshops and master classes on design, sociology, urban geography, literature and visual arts through a network of administrators, broad-minded professors, experts and activists. 8. To hold regular events that promote cultural, touristic and economic attraction of the city. To create favorable conditions for the following: - Relevant business initiatives that not only deal with everyday problems but also serve to improve the quality of life. - Constructive dialogue between different social groups. - Educational programs by Creative Industries University UNITREE in conjunction with leading Ukrainian and foreign experts; contests to discover promising projects, and their implementation. - Literature-related events – literature marathons, book presentations by modern authors, lectures. - Cinema and theater programs – theatrical performances (children's performances, puppet shows, experimental theater, classical theater) and film screenings with Ukrainian and foreign directors at various locations of Kramatorsk during the warm seasons. - Musical programs – house performances, concerts, festivals with invited bands and local performers. - Visual programs in cooperation with designers, artists, photographers and journalists; projects aimed at improving the visual style of the city by involving city authorities and businesses in their implementation.

The project helps accumulate invaluable knowledge, foster understanding among the public, establish ties with business, civil society and art organizations in Ukraine and other countries, extend the reach of the platform beyond Kramatorsk. Joint events are organized in other post-industrial cities dealing with social, educational and cultural issues through a cultural and creative platform that revolves around a mobile art-café. City environment is gradually transformed by monitoring changes to the city and keeping citizens, businessmen and authorities informed of relevant proposals, projects and solutions. A chain of events is forged between partners united by one idea "New sense. New city" that seeks to enrich the city environment with necessary solutions and projects. A new generation is born with the help of Ukrainian and foreign experts and educators. These agents of change will be in the position to contribute to the development of Kramatorsk as well as other cities.
